Finding my inner Rebekah
Abraham's servant, charged with finding Isaac a wife, prays: "May it be that when I say to a young woman, 'Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I"ll water your camels too'--let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac."
Genesis 24:14
When I was reading this passage for devotions, I was tempted to make the take away message, "if I want to find a husband, I need to pray with great faith like Abraham's servant did." And that's not really a bad take away lesson--one should be praying fervently and taking to God's throne all one's requests, hearts' desires, inner feelings and emotions, and being honest before the Father who lavishes all good things.
But then I was thinking more on this passage. The prayer really centers on the character of the woman the servant was looking for. The servant wasn't praying that any old person would come along. He was asking for a girl who would give water to a stranger, then also water all ten of his camels (camels can drink up to 200 litres a day!) To give a better idea of how much water that girl would have to be willing to draw up:
1 Liter of bottle= 1 Smart Water. One camel drinks 200 bottles of Smart Water. 10 Camels X 200 Smart Waters = 2000 Smart Waters!
So in my mind, Rebekah's a pretty kind and generous woman, patient and disciplined.
I've been encouraged and challenged more lately to not think so much about drawing up a list of characteristics of the man I hope to marry one day (If it be in His will), but more of the type of wife I hope to be. And honestly, I don't know if I would have the generosity of soul to draw enough water to hydrate 10 thirsty camels + 1 desperate servant. Just the time necessary to complete the task would send me running!
But I think it's a good time to think about it. I think it's important for me to be centering myself in Christ and disciplining myself to reflect His Spirit's fruit and His Person.
"A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies." Proverbs 31:10
