Feast on Me
Wrote this in response to my time feasting in John this past month...
Based on John 6:35, 7:38--Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty...Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink...Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
Feast on me: God, you say “Feast on me.”
But I’ve never been one for chomping greens.
Why have kale and carrot sticks
When I can have some brownie mix
Or really anything for a quick dessert fix?
When I come home from another day
Of putting out fires or trying to save
Some kid from landing in a hospital daze
All I really want to do is laze
On a couch and watch TV till my eyes are glazed.
Who has the time to read that thick Bible?
I’ve got shows and youtube videos.
Silly books and adventure flings
Too busy and bored to give or sing
Praise or time to my supposed King.
But, wait, what is this?
I know I’m full but I’m feeling sick.
I’m stuffed and my middle’s super thick! (literally!)
I’m feasting but it’s all the wrong foods
All the stuff that’s not good for you
The Great Doctor, He came to heal and save
But I keep putting off the face to face
Too lazy, too busy, too unnaturally full
Too comatose to sense and feel the pull.
Awake, my soul, come and feast!
It was never about starving me.
He says: “I am the bread!”
Come drink the blood and eat of the flesh!
Take out the junk and idols you held
Walk away now from the things that withheld
You from experiencing the life to the full
Come now instead to the table of truth
Feast on me, and never go wanting
Drink of me and you’ll always be savoring
Apart from me and you can do nothing.
I offer up the treasures of heaven.
Hear my words, heed my Spirit
And you’ll see that greens are just the ticket
To health, to life, to endless delight
To satisfaction in every spiritual bite
A chocolate (or a Gilmore Girl episode) every now and then is tasty
But see how my Promised land flows with milk and honey
Come feast on me, come and eat your fill
Come and see how I always fulfill.
